Education Philosophy 2011/7/10
I am an English and Chinese teacher in Taiwan, and I teach Taiwanese students whose ages are 7-16. I have three years experience in cram school and 4 years in tutoring. I’ve taught English, Chinese, geography, history, and math. I enjoy teaching.
For me, students are not just students. They are people who need to be taken care of with very much attention and love.
In order to have a positive attitude, we need five cognitive and affective qualities: enthusiasm for our subject, our own style, skill in planning, the ability to interact well with students and integrate technology with 5Cs.
First of all, teachers have to be enthusiastic about their teaching major. For example, I teach English and Chinese, so I myself love to study in English and Chinese very much. Then, I can share with students things I like vigorously and keep learning in the language field.
Second, teachers must have a teaching style. Each teacher has his/her own style of teaching. We can not imitate or copy others’ teaching method to our class. We always have our own methods, our own class, our own atmosphere in class. Take me as an example, I don’t blame students if they get bad grades. Instead, I will blame them if they do not respect me or are impolite in the class. Also, I always treat students like friends after class. Meanwhile, the atmosphere in my class is very relaxed and joyful. I always do my best to not let students study under pressure. These are my teaching styles and methods.
Third, teachers have to design and plan the whole course well before teaching. Teaching is like a kind of performance and a teacher is like a superstar. Students can watch the performance by multimedia and be motivated their thirsty of knowledge. With the help of NOVA, Merlot, and technology tools, a teacher can be a fabulous superstar on the stage. The students are the audience waiting to see a great show. If we don’t prepare well before we are on the stage, the show will be like a big mess and in chaos. In the opposite, if the teacher does prepare very well, students will concentrate their attention on the stage and learn very fast.
Fourth, the reaction between the teacher and students is also very important. We don’t like a person to just stand at the blackboard and broadcast a program. We need a teacher who can solve our problems, answer our questions, guide our directions, and interact with us immediately in class. The problems what we solve are not only the questions in textbook and assignments, but also any life experiences that students never have and are confused. A teacher is a living person, not an answer robot.
In Taiwan, seldom do teachers use technology tools in their teaching. Therefore, the only one way that students can see in the classroom are the blackboard and chalk. What a pity! After taking the NOVA Startalk program for several days, I’m quite sure that students’ learning efficiency can be changed by technology tools amazingly.
With these tools, students’ can touch, listen, watch and even smell something they never learned from the class and the teacher.
I tried to create some videos, picture galleries and flashcards by computer in NOVA. Surprisingly, I even felt like watching these videos and pictures again and again. And now, I am addicted to these programs and dying to use them in my teaching once if I have any chance.
Moreover, 5 Cs can be integrated in these technology tools. In Community, technology bridges the teacher and students so that students can get more chance to communicate by using computers and willing to do so. Teachers can also create some task-oriented programs by these tools which may lead students to do their assignments with delights and enjoyment.
In Cultures, teachers can use technology tools to introduce Chinese traditional literature such as Tang poetry with songs and videos which are much more fascinating than just reading the textbooks. Students can choose one of their favorite poet and collect their information to show it on their own portfolio.
In Connections, teachers use no more only the blackboard and chunk. With high technology and Internet, everything could be possible in class. Students can listen to the music, watch the video, play the puzzles or even create their own blogs about what they learned, what they created and what they interested in.
In communication, students can obtain information from the living animation and videos, instead of textbooks. Students can present their works by any kinds of forms but not just tests.
In comparison, students can compare both individual’s culture and Chinese culture through the technology tools. For example, google earth is one of the best way for students to see and watch Chinese buildings and historic relicts. The teacher can use these tools to present and compare cultures.
According to the above, to be a good teacher, we have to be enthusiastic about our teaching major, have our own style of teaching, design and plan the whole course well before teaching, react with students well in class and use technology tools. Teachers can finally get rid of the bind of tradition and create the lessons more attractive and interesting. Students can also concentrate on learning and be more willing to learn. Teachers indeed can not rely on technology excessively. Since there are numerous advantages of using technology tools, if we use these tools in an appropriate amount or degree, technology can be the most friendly tools in the future.
